How to Choose Paper Weight for Custom Packaging

Paper weight is measured in grams per square meter (gsm). It determines the stiffness, feel and durability of boxes, bags and tags — and it directly affects cost.

Light papers (under 250 gsm) fold easily and suit wrapping paper, tissue and simple flyers. Mid-range papers (250–350 gsm) are the standard for folding carton boxes and shopping bags that must hold shape without heavy reinforcement. Heavy boards (350 gsm and above, including laminated rigid board) are used for premium rigid gift boxes that must feel substantial.

Structure matters as much as weight: a box made from 300 gsm board can feel stronger than a thinner 400 gsm board when the fold, glue and construction are well executed. For bags, the handle and bottom reinforcement matter more than the side wall paper alone.

A practical approach: define the product's weight and the 'premium feel' you want first, then let your supplier recommend a grammage range and structure. Samples are the reliable way to compare feel before you commit to a large order.
